Soccer Rides Wave Of Momentum Into Hattiesburg
September 03, 2016 | Soccer
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Following their first road overtime victory since 2004, the Mississippi State Bulldogs (3-2-0) shift focus to the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles (3-0-0) for a Sunday showdown in Hattiesburg at 5 p.m. CT.
The Golden Eagles will be well rested for the matchup, after their Friday game versus Alcorn State was cancelled.
"We had an incredible performance last night, but now we have to focus on Sunday," head coach Aaron Gordon said. "Sunday games are always tough, especially on the road. This season our depth has helped to combat that, because we have so many players that are capable to step in and give us quality minutes. We're excited to play Southern Miss and look forward to getting back out on the field."
Sunday's game will mark the seventh-consecutive meeting between MSU and USM, with the Bulldogs only dropping one of those seven contests. The Bulldogs are 2-0-0 this season on the road and 1-1-0 in Sunday contests.
Last Time Out:
In her first game back following injury, freshman McKenna de Graaf scored her first collegiate goal, which happened to be a game-winner in the 101st minute. The Bulldogs earned two unanswered scores to top the Jaguars, as MSU left Mobile with the double-overtime win. The 2-1 victory marked the first time since 2001 the Bulldogs have won in Mobile, while also snapping a three-game losing skid against the Jags in the overall series.
Scouting Southern Miss:
The Golden Eagles enter Sunday's game with an undefeated record, after three wins against Arkansas State, Louisiana Monroe and Louisiana Lafayette. USM has only allowed one goal so far this season, while scoring four times in the three wins.
Bulldogs Finding Offense:
MSU has been on a goal-scoring tear to begin the 2016 season, scoring eight times in the first five games. To put that in perspective with last year's team, the 2015 Bulldogs didn't reach eight scores until game 14 of the season. Of the eight scores, seven have been scored by different players, with only MaKayla Waldner scoring multiple times. On Sunday,
Keys For MSU:
The Bulldogs have been successful this year when they're in attack mode, which is what they'll be looking to do against the Golden Eagles. Forwards Mallory Eubanks and MaKayla Waldner have been pivotal in that, with sophomore Kennadi Carbin providing speed on the left wing from the midfielder position.
Up Next:
Following the Sunday game against USM, the Bulldogs will return home as MSU kicks off a three-game homestand that begins with Arkansas on Friday, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. CT.
