Jen Huckaby earned her first collegiate goal in defeat.
MSU Drops Tough Game In Overtime To Missouri
September 25, 2016 | Soccer
COLUMBIA, Mo. – A valiant effort on the road was not enough for the Mississippi State soccer team (5-6-0, 0-4-0 SEC) as the Bulldogs fell to Missouri (8-3-0, 3-1-0 SEC) in overtime, 2-1.
"I am proud of how we performed today, despite us not getting the result we wanted," head coach Aaron Gordon said. "We've had to deal with a lot of adversity this past week and our team fought through that and showed heart. I think we're heading in the right direction and our players can keep their heads up after the way they competed today."
From the onset the pace was much improved for MSU as the Bulldogs created three chances on goal in the first 15 minutes. The attacking mindset continued as MSU's pressure allowed junior Mallory Eubanks to find sophomore Jen Huckaby inside the box for the chip in score. The goal was Huckaby's first as a Bulldog while the assist was Eubanks' team-leading third of the season.
Mizzou would get a flurry of chances before the break, but the backline and goalkeeper Tanya de Souza would halt the Tiger attack and keep the 1-0 advantage at the break. The 1-0 lead after 45 minutes marked MSU's first halftime lead in conference play.
The surge of offense for Mizzou would carry over to the second half, as the Tigers would get on the board via the own goal after a corner kick in the 57th minute. The two teams played to a dead heat the rest of the way as regulation ended with the score at 1-1.
In overtime, Mizzou's Allie Hess headed in a game-winner in the 98th minute as the Tigers pounced on a set piece to score off the corner. The score was Hess' fifth of the season.
Eubanks Adding Points
After her first-half assist to Jen Huckaby, junior Mallory Eubanks now has nine points this season which is one shy of her career-high 10 last year.
Goal Scoring Rundown:
MSU – (37:49) Sophomore Jen Huckaby earned her first collegiate goal after a beautiful dish from Mallory Eubanks, to put the Bulldogs ahead 1-0
MU – (57:42) A corner kick from the Tigers found its way into the net after hitting off of Johanna Hamblett. The own goal would square things back up at 1-1
MU – 98:37) Allie Hess headed in the game-winner on a Kaitlyn Clark corner kick to give the Tigers the 1-0 win.
