NORMAN, Okla. — In Day 1 of the Schooner Fall Classic, the Mississippi State women's golf team combined for a total of 10 birdies and 54 pars in two rounds to open the tournament.
Due to weather conditions, two rounds were played on Saturday, and the Bulldogs find themselves 11th overall after shooting a 596.
In the opening 18 holes, the Bulldogs fired a 298. Senior Jessica Peng tied with five other players for 16th place after posting a 70.
Sophomore Katie Holt and freshman Athena Yang were both neck and neck with each other in round one and both posted a 75. Holt also combined for a total of 14 pars while Peng followed closely behind with 13.
MSU coach Ginger Brown-Lemm noted Saturday's two rounds offered an opportunity for her team to grow and learn.
"It was a learning process," she said. "We have two freshmen that had to get their feet wet in the Oklahoma wind. Our seniors struggled; they pushed too hard and weren't patient. That, coupled with some decision making errors, made for a tough day, but this is a great team and we learned from today. We are reloading."
After the second round, Peng, a Taiwan native, stands 25th with three other players carding a 145, while Holt is tied in the 37th at 148. Yang tied with three others in the 39th spot with a 7-over-149.
Florida State sits atop the leaderboard at 549, followed by Alabama and Clemson at 557 and 566, respectively.
The Bulldogs tee off at 11 am CT for the third and final round. Live stats will be provided via Birdiefire.com
