Bulldogs hit the road for weekend matchups.
Soccer Travels To Mobile For Friday Showdown
September 01, 2016 | Soccer
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Fresh off a successful month of August, the Mississippi State soccer team (2-2-0) looks to carry momentum into September as the Bulldogs face South Alabama (2-1-1) on Friday, Sept. 2 at 7 p.m. CT.
The contest in Mobile, Ala., will be the first of a two-game road trip, which ends on Sunday, Sept. 4 against Southern Miss.
"We're coming off a great performance and I'm looking forward to this Friday's test," head coach Aaron Gordon said. "South Alabama always has a good club, they're coming off a great season and they're returning a lot from that team. It'll be a great game and we're excited for the challenge."
Last Time Out:
The Bulldogs capped their first homestand of the season with a 3-1 victory against UT Martin last Sunday. Gordon's squad poured on three unanswered scores on its way to the win, which was MSU's second of the season. Freshman MaKayla Waldner and junior Mallory Eubanks earned first period goals, as junior Kelly Dorney added another in the final minutes of the game.
Scouting South Alabama:
The 2015 Sun Belt champions return 14 letterwinners from last year's 18-3-2 squad. The Jaguars are on a two-game winning streak after road wins against Jacksonville State and Belmont last weekend. Junior Rio Hardy and sophomore Jemma Purfield lead the team with two goals a piece.
Keys For MSU:
In 2016 the Bulldogs have amped up their goal production, with MSU scoring six times in its first four games. State is well ahead of last year's pace, as last year's squad didn't net six goals until game seven of 2015. Key to the goal production is MSU's three-pronged attack from forwards Eubanks, Waldner and Kennadi Carbin. The forward trio has scored half of MSU's goals this season.
Assists Adding Up:
Five Bulldogs have picked up assists this season, with junior McKenzie Adams leading the way at two for the year. Eubanks, Alexa England, Johanna Hamblett and Carly Mauldin all have one a piece.
Up Next:
The Maroon and White continue the road trip on Sunday, as the Bulldogs travel to Hattiesburg for a 5 p.m. CT contest against Southern Miss. The game for the Golden Eagles will be their lone game of the weekend, after the cancellation of their Friday matchup against Alcorn State.
