Soccer Prepares For Wednesday Exhibition Against Memphis
August 09, 2016 | Soccer
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Fourth-year head coach Aaron Gordon and the Mississippi State soccer team hosts the University of Memphis on Wednesday, Aug. 10, at 6 p.m. to mark the first of two friendlies for the Bulldogs this preseason.
Due to the threat of inclement weather, Wednesday's contest could be moved up from its original 6 p.m. start time. For time change updates, follow "HailStateSOC" on Twitter.
"We're excited to take the field tomorrow against a very good Memphis team," Gordon said. "Much of our lineup is still up for grabs because our team has competed so well in training this year. We're looking forward to seeing them out on the field against another squad to gauge where we are as a unit going into next weekend's season opener."
The Bulldogs faced Memphis last season in exhibition play, as the Bulldogs defeated the Tigers 2-1.
2015 Season Review
Last season, the Bulldogs earned their first ranked win in over four years, their first conference win in over three years and the first win in program history against Arkansas on the road. MSU posted a 5-10-3 record, finishing a point shy of qualifying for the SEC Tournament for the first time since 2004.
2016 Roster Breakdown
MSU enters 2016 having lost only four players from last year's squad. Captain Mallory Eubanks headlines the returnees, after the Lexington, Ky., native led the team in points (10) and assists (4) as a sophomore.
Eubanks is one of nine juniors on the Bulldog roster, which is the most of any Gordon team at MSU. Three seniors, 10 juniors, eight sophomores and eight freshmen round make up the 29-player roster for the Bulldogs.
2016 Newcomers
Wednesday's exhibition will be the first collegiate experience for eight newcomers to the 2016 team. Freshman MaKayla Waldner leads the talented group looking to make an immediate impact for the Bulldogs. The four-star prospect from Dexter, Mo., comes to Starkville as a talented scorer that will be go-to option for the Maroon and White offense.
Previewing Memphis
The Tigers enter the 2016 season after turning in an 8-8-3 record a year ago. Led by head coach Brooks Monaghan, who is in his 16th season with the club, the Tigers return 17 players from the 2015 roster after only losing six. Leading scorer Valerie Sanderson is the player to watch for Monaghan's squad, after the forward tallied 16 points on six goals and four assists in 2015 for Memphis.
Up Next For MSU
After facing the Tigers on Wednesday, the Bulldogs will travel to Ames, Iowa for a friendly against Iowa State on Saturday, Aug. 13, at 7:30 p.m. CT. The exhibition will be the final prep for the preseason before the Bulldogs focus on kicking off the 2016 season against College of Charleston on Friday, Aug. 19, in Charleston, S.C.
