Soccer Travels To Iowa State To Cap Exhibition Slate
August 12, 2016 | Soccer
STARKVILLE, Miss. – After a dominating performance against Memphis on Wednesday night, the Mississippi State soccer team prepares for its final exhibition of the Fall as the Bulldogs battle Iowa State on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. CT.
MSU has only traveled to Ames, Iowa once in its history, a 2003 regular season contest that the Bulldogs dropped, 2-0.
"We're excited to hit the road this weekend and face a tough team," head coach Aaron Gordon said. "This will be a good experience for our club to get a feel for a road game and to see a team like Iowa State. Coach Tony Minatta has a very physical group, so it'll be fun to go up against a team like that."
Scouting Iowa State:
The Cyclones return nine starters from last season's squad that went 6-12, as ISU fields an experienced team that features seven seniors. One player that will be an impact for the Cyclones will be senior Koree Willer, who was tabbed an All-Big 12 First Team member in 2015. Willer enters her final season at ISU tied for third all-time in career goals (20) for the Cyclones as the Fort Collins, Colo., native headlines the attack. At goal ISU is likely to start junior Lindsey Hendon, the keeper was just one shutout shy of tying the single season shutout record for ISU after turning in six in 2015.
Last Time Out For MSU:
Gordon's squad turned on the jets Wednesday night and blew past Memphis, as the Bulldogs scored three times to mark the most goals for a Bulldog club in friendly action since 2011. Sophomore Carly Mauldin, freshman McKenna de Graaf and junior Payton Gruenewald were all able to connect for scores, while senior Ari Holmes and freshman Emily Malone picked up assists on the first two goals.
Keys For MSU:
Crucial to MSU's success this season will be the ability of the Bulldogs to get into the attacking third, which Gordon's squad did with ease on Wednesday night. Speed played a big part in that aspect as captain Mallory Eubanks and freshman MaKayla Waldner led the attack, with sophomore Kennadi Carbin providing another option as a midfielder on the left wing.
Up Next:
After Saturday's contest, the Bulldogs will officially kick off the 2016 season in Charleston, S.C., as MSU battles College of Charleston on Friday, Aug. 19, at 6:30 p.m., before facing Virginia Tech for a Sunday contest at 10:00 a.m., also in Charleston.
