Two National Champion Bulldogs Eye Olympic Glory Friday

STARKVILLE, Miss. – A pair of former Bulldog greats with four national championships between them now turn their attention to South America, looking to win Olympic glory for their home countries.
Brandon McBride and Marta Freitas, who have each recently finished stellar careers at Mississippi State, will compete Friday in the 800m and 1500m races, respectively, in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Windsor, Ontario, Canada, native Brandon McBride qualified for the men's 800m after winning Canada's national championship in July with a time of 1:45.25. McBride won two national titles in the event during his time as a Bulldog.
Hailing from Libson, Portugal, Freitas will run in the women's 1500m after finishing second in the qualifying round with a time of 4:06.54 seconds last June. Two weeks before qualifying for the 2016 Olympic games, Freitas won a national title in the same event for the Bulldogs.
The two will be joined in Rio by their former coach, Steve Dudley.
"I am incredibly proud of Marta and Brandon for being able to represent their native countries in the Olympics tomorrow," Dudley said. "They each had great careers at Mississippi State, and I am excited to get to Rio and cheer both of them on as they compete on the sport's biggest stage."
McBride is first scheduled to run the prelims 8:55 a.m. CT, while Freitas' prelims will follow that evening at 6:30 p.m. CT. To view a live-stream of both events, click here.
