On a busy week full of action for our nearly double-digit teams in the middle of their seasons right now, I want to wish good luck to a group of Bulldogs getting ready to begin their post-graduate careers. Coach Mullen's football team has their NFL Pro Day tomorrow morning, the entirety of which you'll be able to watch on the SEC Network from 9-11:30 a.m.
This group of players makes up much of the core that helped us to No. 1 in the country, that won 19 games the last two years and that put Mississippi State football squarely in the middle of the national conversation. Their contributions and efforts on behalf of our school will never be forgotten. We are already proud of each of you and can't wait to see where life takes you next, whether on the field or in an office. Good luck at Pro Day. Your Bulldog family is behind you!
CONGRATS AND GOOD LUCK TO OUR BASKETBALL TEAMS
First, I'd like to say to job well done to our No. 15 women's basketball team for their run to the SEC Tournament Championship Game over the weekend. I had a blast watching them in Jacksonville as they showed again that they are one of the top teams in the SEC and the country.
On that note, a huge congratulations goes to Victoria Vivians for winning the Gillom Trophy, given annually to the top collegiate women's basketball in the state of Mississippi. This is the second year in a row Victoria has won the award, and she's only been in college for two years! We are proud of her accomplishments and the job Coach Schaefer has done to lead her along that path.
On Monday night, we will host a watch party for the NCAA Tournament selection show – details to be released soon – and we are looking forward to the postseason. We don't yet know if we will be picked to host the first two rounds, but I have no problem stating my belief that our Bulldogs are one of the best 16 teams in the country and deserve to play at home in front of a packed out Humphrey Coliseum. Hopefully, that wish can be granted.
Also, good luck to Coach Howland and our men's team in the SEC Tournament in Nashville this weekend, starting against Georgia tomorrow night at 8:30 p.m. CT on the SEC Network. Our guys won four of their last six games to end the season, including a particularly enjoyable Senior Day win on Saturday, and it's been a great deal of fun to watch them improve so much over the course of Coach Howland's first season. I look forward to following them this weekend.
WRAPPING UP THIS WEEK'S EMAIL IN MAROON AND WHITE
- Make sure you join us this weekend for a top-25 baseball matchup as Coach Cohen and the guys host Oregon Friday-Sunday for what should be an entertaining series between two very talented clubs.
- Congrats to both of our tennis teams for wins over the weekend as SEC play began, our No. 25 women taking down Tennessee at home Friday and our men beating South Carolina on Sunday. The women are on the road this weekend, but our men are in town, so make sure to come support them on Friday at 5 against Kentucky and Sunday at 1 against Tennessee.
- Good luck to our competitors in track and field who will be vying for titles this weekend at the Indoor National Championships in Birmingham.
- Good luck, as well, to our softball team on the road against strong competition in the Louisville Slugger Invitational in Long Beach, California.
- And finally, to all of our students, staff and administrators who are off next week, I wish you a safe and happy spring break!
We appreciate what you do for Mississippi State Athletics and want to encourage you to get others involved. There are three things you can do to help the athletic department at Mississippi State reach its desired goals –
1. Buy Season Tickets
2. Financially Support the Bulldog Club
3. Get Others To Do The Same
Thanks for taking the time to read this Update.
Hail State!
