As we enter the final days of the semester here on campus, we're wrapping up the end of a few regular seasons in athletics as well as classes on the academic end with finals beginning soon following the last day of classes yesterday. Our student-athletes have continued to set the standard in the classroom and we wish them good luck and great studies as they finish up the fall semester. All told, we have 25 student-athletes graduating at the end of semester.
With the conclusion of the regular season in football, bowl season will soon be upon us. This link shows how the new bowl selection process works in the SEC and we anticipate Mississippi State being in one of the "Pool of Six" bowls, which includes the Music City, Belk, Liberty, Outback, Texas and Taxslayer bowls. The ticket office is currently taking pre-orders for each destination. The Bulldogs' bowl destination and opponent will be known Sunday night.
After posting eight regular-season wins for the fourth time in the last six years, this will be MSU's record sixth-straight bowl, and I look forward to seeing a strong Bulldog contingent for the holidays. More information on securing tickets is available here.
VOLLEYBALL CAPS FIRST SEASON UNDER MCFATRICH
On the subject of regular seasons coming to a close, I want to congratulate Coach David McFatrich, the team and the entire staff on a highly-enjoyable first season. By closing the season with three-straight SEC wins (over Georgia, LSU and Ole Miss) the volleyball Bulldogs posted their first winning campaign in nine years, an impressive accomplishment for a coach in his first year leading the program. The future is extremely bright under Coach "Fatch."
WRAPPING UP THIS WEEK'S LETTER IN MAROON AND WHITE
We've got a couple months until the season begins, but there is a lot happening with the softball program. We announced our 2016 schedule and construction on the new stadium is progressing very nicely with much of the structure in place and seats being filled in soon. You can check out the live construction cam here and the most recent photo gallery here.
While the next few weeks will be light on home events with finals and Christmas break, both our men's and women's basketball teams are at home this week. Our men host Texas Southern tonight at 7 p.m., while our No. 9 women are on the road at No. 6 Texas tonight before returning home to host Tennessee State on Sunday at 2 p.m.
And finally, a pair of football congratulations are in order for Dak Prescott and Taveze Calhoun. Last night in Jackson, Dak became the first to win consecutive Conerly Awards, given to the best college football player in Mississippi. And next week, Taveze travels to New York City, where he is a finalist and will attend the awards ceremony for the National Football Foundation's Campbell Trophy (the "Academic Heisman"), given to outstanding seniors who show leadership, skill and dedication both on and off the field. Taveze is one of 12 finalists for the award, and the only SEC player to be so honored this season. (FYI … the last Bulldog to be a Campbell finalist was Derek Sherrod in 2010).
We appreciate what you do for Mississippi State Athletics and want to encourage you to get others involved. There are three things you can do to help the athletic department at Mississippi State reach its desired goals –
1. Buy Season Tickets
2. Financially Support the Bulldog Club
3. Get Others To Do The Same
Thanks for taking the time to read this Update.
Hail State!
