As I write to all of you this week, we in the athletic department are fresh off a visit from new Southeastern Conference Commissioner Greg Sankey. The Commissioner is on a tour of the 14 conference schools and joined us Tuesday to speak to our coaches, staff, administrators, student-athletes and student workers over the course of the day, as well as to have a meeting with President Mark Keenum.
It was an honor to host him on campus and a privilege to hear the insight of the man running our conference. Commissioner Sankey is, naturally, a very smart individual, but it was a quite simple truth he reminded us of that stuck with me. In all we do in athletics, the base of what we are here for is the education and advancement of young people. It is our charge to transform our student-athletes from adolescents to adults, giving them the tools and training necessary to represent themselves, as well as our university, in a successful manner the rest of their lives.
We will continue to cheer on our Bulldogs passionately on the fields, courts, tracks and courses, but let us also not forget to be equally as invested in the outcome of their lives.
EGG BOWL, MEN'S BASKETBALL DOUBLEHEADER
You may have seen the news on social media, but as you make holiday and Egg Bowl plans, I want to be sure you are aware of times and scheduling for next Saturday's big events. The SEC announced the Battle for the Golden Egg will kickoff at 6:15 on ESPN2. With that now set, our men's basketball game against UT Martin in The Hump that day will begin at noon, which ought to make for an enjoyable Saturday and give you plenty of time to enjoy both without missing any of the action.
As is standard procedure, parking and all other gameday operations will be guided under football gameday rules, so you will have to park where you typically are located for football games when you go to The Hump for basketball.
WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY IN NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
We talk often about competing for championships around here, and on Saturday our No. 20 women's cross country team will do just that. After placing 2nd in the NCAA South Regional last weekend – a record finish for the program – our ladies will be competing on Saturday morning in the NCAA Championships in Louisville, Kentucky, with the National Title on the line.
Five of our seven scorers in the regional placed in the top 35, while four of them earned All-Region honors. Good luck to Coach Franks and the team this weekend and congrats on what has been an impressive season.
WRAPPING UP THIS WEEK'S EMAIL IN MAROON AND WHITE
If you're not traveling to Arkansas for football on Saturday, make sure you join us in Starkville that afternoon for women's basketball as Coach Schaefer and the No. 10 Bulldogs host Grambling at 1 p.m.
Good luck to our men's team who landed in Puerto Rico last night for a tournament by the beach, and congrats to senior forward Gavin Ware for being named the SEC Player of the Week this week.
And finally, as promised, Coach Cohen and the baseball team officially announced their schedule for the 2016 season with opening day on February 19. Check out the full schedule here.
We appreciate what you do for Mississippi State Athletics and want to encourage you to get others involved. There are three things you can do to help the athletic department at Mississippi State reach its desired goals –
1. Buy Season Tickets
2. Financially Support the Bulldog Club
3. Get Others To Do The Same
Thanks for taking the time to read this Update.
Hail State!
