Three Bulldogs Named To ABCA/Rawlings South All-Region Teams

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Three Diamond Dawgs garnered more accolades on Wednesday, as Dakota Hudson, Jake Mangum and Brent Rooker were named ABCA/Rawlings South All-Region.
The trio marks the most Bulldogs to be named ABCA/Rawlings All-Region since 2013 (Hunter Renfroe, Adam Frazier, Jonathan Holder). Hudson and Mangum pulled in first team honors, while Rooker landed on the second team.
The two first team honorees are the most for MSU since 1996, when Eric DuBose and Rob Hauswald were named First Team All-Region.
Hudson's All-Region honor adds to a trio of All-American honors, as the right-handed junior was named Second Team All-American by Baseball America, Louisville Slugger and the NCBWA. The Bulldogs' ace also became the 13th Bulldog to be drafted in the first round of the MLB Draft after the St. Louis Cardinals took him with the 34th pick last week.
A native of Dunlap, Tennessee, Hudson capped an impressive 2016 season after helping lead MSU to its first SEC Championship since 1989. Hudson led the Bulldogs with a 9-5 record and a 2.55 ERA, which is fifth in the SEC. He tossed three complete games in 113.0 innings of work, allowing only 106 hits and 35 walks. The junior finished the year with 115 strikeouts, good for fifth in the conference. That mark ties for eighth in MSU history with former Diamond Dawg All-American Jeff Brantley, who struck out 115 batters in 1984.
Hudson's nine wins this season are the most by a Bulldog pitcher since Ross Mitchell had 13 during the 2013 campaign.
For Mangum, his All-Region honor adds to an already stellar freshman season that includes four All-American designations to date. Mangum's honors include First Team NCBWA Freshman, Second Team NCBWA, Third Team Baseball America and Louisville Slugger Freshman Team.
In addition to being MSU's first SEC Freshman of the Year, Mangum also became the first Bulldog rookie since Rafael Palmeiro in 1983 to be named to the All-SEC First Team. The Pearl, Miss., native also holds the title of best collegiate baseball player in the state of Mississippi, as he brought home the 2016 C Spire Ferriss Trophy last month.
With a .408 clip, Mangum leads the SEC, stands seventh nationally and leads all freshmen in the nation in batting average. Mangum also stands top 10 in the SEC in on-base percentage (.458, 5th) and hits (84, 7th).
Rooker finished his second year in the Maroon and White leading the squad with 54 RBIs, 11 home runs and a .578 slugging percentage. Rooker, who was named All-SEC Second Team last month, made a strong push towards the end of the season, as he earned a .412 average with 9 RBIs, 4 home runs and a 1.176 slugging percentage throughout the NCAA Tournament. Rooker also turned in two multi-home run games, one in Regionals and one in Super Regionals.
Rooker's strong play in the postseason landed him NCAA Starkville Regional Most Outstanding Player honors, becoming the first Bulldog since Alex Detz in 2013 to earn Regional MOP laurels.
ABCA/Rawlings All-Americans will be announced on Saturday, June 18 and the ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove Team will be announced on Sunday, June 19.
