Hudson, Mangum Garner NCBWA Second Team All-American Honors
June 15, 2016 | Baseball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – All-American honors have become the standard for Mississippi State this year and two more were added to the books on Wednesday, as junior righty Dakota Hudson and freshman outfielder Jake Mangum earned NCBWA Second Team All-American status.
Hudson reeled in his third All-American honor this season, while today marks the fourth for Mangum. Hudson, who was drafted in the first round of the 2016 MLB Draft last week by the St. Louis Cardinals, was previously named a Louisville Slugger and Baseball America All-American this year. Mangum has earned Baseball America All-American, Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American and NCBWA Freshman All-American accolades in the last week.
A native of Dunlap, Tennessee, Hudson capped an impressive 2016 season after helping lead MSU to its first SEC Championship since 1989. Hudson led the Bulldogs with a 9-5 record and a 2.55 ERA, which is fifth in the SEC. He tossed three complete games in 113.0 innings of work, allowing only 106 hits and 35 walks. The junior finished the year with 115 strikeouts, good for fifth in the conference. That mark ties for eighth in MSU history with former Diamond Dawg All-American Jeff Brantley, who struck out 115 batters in 1984.
Hudson's nine wins this season are the most by a Bulldog pitcher since Ross Mitchell had 13 during the 2013 campaign.
For Mangum, his fourth All-American honor adds to an already stellar freshman season. In addition to being MSU's first SEC Freshman of the Year, Mangum also became the first Bulldog rookie since Rafael Palmeiro in 1983 to be named to the All-SEC First Team.
Mangum is the first Bulldog freshman since Jonathan Holder in 2012 to receive All-American status. That season the Bulldog closer became the first MSU freshman in program history to be named a consensus All-American.
With a .408 clip, Mangum leads the SEC, stands seventh nationally and leads all freshmen in the nation in batting average. Mangum also stands top 10 in the SEC in on-base percentage (.458, 5th) and hits (84, 7th).
Mangum also holds the title of best collegiate baseball player in the state of Mississippi, as he brought home the 2016 C Spire Ferriss Trophy last month.
With today's awards, Mississippi State now has 43 All-Americans (53 honors) and 33 Freshman All-Americans in program history.
