STARKVILLE, Miss. – After spearheading the Bulldogs' late season push to claim the Southeastern Conference Regular Season Championship, junior Dakota Hudson has been named the NCBWA's National Pitcher of the Month for May.
The Dunlap, Tenn., native put together a prolific May, finishing with a 3-1 record and a 0.86 ERA over a total of 31.1 innings pitched. The righty tossed back-to-back complete game shutouts in final two weekends to lead MSU to its first SEC Championship since 1989.
In his 31.1 innings of work, Hudson allowed just 27 hits and walked only four batters while striking out 33. His three victories were key in the Bulldogs capturing three-straight sweeps to end the regular season, a feat accomplished for the first time since 1989.
Hudson, who last week was named a semifinalist for the USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award, is 9-4 on the year with a 2.62 ERA. He has tossed three complete games in 106.2 innings, allowing only 99 hits and 34 walks. The junior has 109 strikeouts on the year, which puts him tied for ninth with former Diamond Dawg All-American Eric DuBose, who struck out 109 batters in 1995.
The NCBWA's monthly honor adds to the list of honors for the Bulldog ace, as he was named Second-Team All-America by Collegiate Baseball last week.
Hudson and the No. 6 national seed Bulldogs finished off a sweep of the 2016 NCAA Starkville Regional with a 4-0 victory against LA Tech Sunday night at Dudy Noble to advance to the Super Regionals for the sixth time in program history. MSU will host a Super for only the second time in school history and await the winner of Louisiana-Arizona.
