Dominating Weekend Lands Lowe SEC Player Of The Week Honors
May 09, 2016 | Baseball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – A dominating weekend at the plate and leading No. 4 Mississippi State to a sweep of Missouri has landed junior first baseman Nathaniel Lowe SEC Player of the Week honors.
The Marietta, Ga., native had the first five-hit performance for a Bulldog this season after going 5-for-5 against Missouri on Thursday. Lowe's dominating show at the plate marked only the second time this season an SEC player had five hits in a conference contest (Gene Cone, South Carolina vs. Missouri, April 24).
Lowe's five hits, one of which was a two-run homer, led a 19-hit performance by MSU on the night, which was the highest for State in an SEC game this season and tied for the most hits in any game this season (March 22 vs. Mississippi Valley State).
For the weekend, Lowe went 9-for-13 (.692) with 4 RBIs, 3 runs, 2 doubles and a home run, leading MSU to its first SEC sweep this year. Lowe's dominance at the plate also led the Maroon and White to its seventh SEC series victory this year, tying for the most in the John Cohen era.
After picking up multiple hits in each game this weekend, the junior now has 20 multi-hit games this season, the first Bulldog to do so since Brett Pirtle in 2014. He also upped his season average to .351, moving him up to eighth in the conference and is now tied for sixth in the league with 66 hits this season, which also leads MSU.
The honor is the fifth weekly honor for a Bulldog this season, as Lowe joins Brent Rooker (Player of the Week, March 14), Dakota Hudson (Pitcher of the Week, March 21 & April 4) and Jake Mangum (Freshman of the Week, April 11) to be honored by the conference.
Lowe and the Bulldogs return to action on Wednesday with their final non-conference game of the season at Troy at 6 p.m. State will stay on the road for its final SEC road series of the year with a three-game tilt against Auburn. The series will begin on Friday, May 13 at 6 p.m. CT (SEC Network), followed by a 3:30 p.m. SEC Network contest on Saturday. A 5 p.m. SEC Network + game will close out the series on Sunday.
