May 03, 2016 | Track & Field
STARKIVLLE, Miss – Competing on his home track for one last time Saturday, Brandon McBride showed out during the 800m run earning him NCAA National Athlete of the Week honors.
McBride was also named the SEC Men's Runner of the Week.
“It feels so good to bring such positive attention to the school,” McBride said. “Mississippi State has given me a wonderful opportunity and provided me with free education. This was not just a great moment for me, but the team in general. I've seen this team come so far, and I'm truly proud to call myself a Bulldog. I'm just happy I can be someone that can bring this type of positive attention to Mississippi State.”
The Mississippi State track and field senior recorded the top mark in the world in the 800m run this season after running a time of 1:44.63 at the Mike Sanders Track & Field Complex.
After recording a school record time in the event on his home track, McBride leads the nation in the event. His time is also the third-best time in NCAA history. The Windsor, Ontario native ran the fastest time the 800m run in April by a collegiate athlete.
Earlier this season, McBride broke the school record in the 1500m run prior to making his appearance in the 800m run. He still ranks 17th nationally in the event with a time of 3:41.92.
The middle-distance runner is no stranger to success. During the 2014 season, McBride was crowned the indoor and outdoor NCAA 800m run champion.
“We are so proud of Brandon and everything he's accomplished,” MSU coach Steve Dudley said. “He's a great student-athlete on and off the track. It's been great getting to see him achieve so much, and I'm happy to see him earn this honor.”
Next up for McBride will be the SEC Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Tuscaloosa on May 12-14.
