MSU Shortstop Thomas Berkery Inks With Texas Rangers

STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mississippi State senior shortstop Thomas Berkery has signed a professional baseball contract with the Texas Rangers. The Sarasota, Fla. native, selected by Texas in the 46th round of last year's Major League draft, signed with the Rangers Monday night in advance of the start of the 2006 Major League draft.
Berkery drew primary starting duties at four different positions over the past four seasons, compiling a .314 career batting average. He captured the 2006 regular season batting crown with a .393 average, concluding his career in last weekend's NCAA Clemson Regional with a league-best .383 batting average.
The Sarasota, Fla., product, a second-team Collegiate Baseball/Louisville Slugger All-American and first-team All-Southeastern Conference selection, received the 2006 Cellular South Ferriss Trophy as the top collegiate baseball player in Mississippi.
Berkery will report to Spokane, Washington, next week to begin his professional career with the Spokane Indians in the Northwest League (short-season Class A).
