
Rebs Nip Dogs 6-5 In 10-Inning Thriller

The Bulldogs fell behind 5-1after five innings against UM starter WillKline. Kline, who retired the first nine batters he faced in the game,limited the Bulldogs to one run over the first six innings.
State got back in the game in the seventh inning on the strength of atwo-run Brian LaNinfa home run over the center field wall. State kept thegame going with two runs in the ninth. Mitch Moreland doubled and JosephHunter followed with a single to left that was misplayed, allowing Morelandto score. Hunter later scored from third on an infield grounder to short byMichael Rutledge. Hunter tied the game when Zack Cozart's throw to the plategot away from catcher Justin Brashear.
Chris Coghlan singled, stole second and third and scored the Rebels' firstrun in the opening inning on an Alex Presley single to right. UM stretchedthe lead to 3-0 in the third inning, parlaying a lead-off walk, two singles,a Bulldog throwing error and a sacrifice fly into two runs.
State plated it first run in the fourth inning with singles by Jeffrey Reaand Thomas Berkery and an infield groundout by LaNinfa.
LaNinfa¹s ninth home run of the season made it a 5-3 game and the Bulldogsthreatened to take the lead in the eighth MSU got a pair of one-out hitsand Edward Easley sent a drive to the centerfield wall that just missedgiving MSU a 6-5 lead. State left the bases loaded in the frame when GarrettWhite got Laninfa to pop up to end the inning
MSU then tied the score with two runs in the ninth with runs scoring on anoutfield fielding error and Rutledge's fielder's choice grounder toshortstop.
The Rebels answered in the 10th. Cozart opened the frame with an infieldsingle, advanced to second on a bunt, and after relief pitcher BrettCleveland retired C.J. Ketchum on a liner to right, Power laced thegame-winning single to left.
Cleveland (1-1) worked 1-1/3 innings and allowed the one run on two hits totake the loss. Starter Brooks Dunn, after giving up five runs (four earned)on seven hits over the first five innings, retired the last nine batters hefaced to keep State in contention.
Freshman Aaron Weatherford replaced Dunn in the ninth, walking two andstriking out two before replaced by Cleveland.
Satterwhite (10-2) worked the final 1-1/3 innings for UM, getting the finalout of the ninth and retiring three of the four Bulldog batters he faced inthe 10th to earn the win.
The top four in the Rebel batting order combined for seven of UM's ninehits, two each by Coghlan, Cozart and Presley. Rea, Berkery, Moreland andHunter had two hits each while LaNinfa drove in three of the Bulldogs' fiveruns. Berkery extended his hitting streak to 12 games.
The weekend series continues at Dudy Noble Field with a 6:30 p.m. game.MSU's seven senior players will be honored prior to the game.
