
Bulldogs Sign Illinois All-Stater Connor Powers

Powers is a 6-3, 210-pound multi-position player at Benet Academy, where heis coached by Jeff Bonebrake and has helped lead the Redwings to a 12-4start. The right-handed hitting Powers has played a variety of positions andhas pitched for Benet Academy. Sixteen games into his senior season he isbatting over .400 with seven home runs and 30 RBI and has posted a 2-0pitching record with an 0.77 ERA.
"Connor is considered by many baseball people in Illinois to be one of thefinest hitters in the state," said Polk. "He is a multi-position player,which is important in college baseball. Not only is Connor a great baseballplayer, but he is equally outstanding in the classroom, and we are proud ofConnor's decision to attend Mississippi State University."
The MSU signee earned first-team all-state honors in 2005 and all-conferenceand all-area plaudits in both his sophomore and junior seasons. He hit .505with 23 extra-base hits (12 doubles, three triples and eight home runs)during an injury-shortened junior campaign. He also posted a 5-1 pitchingrecord with a save and a 1.47 earned run average and was successful on 13 of14 stolen base attempts.
"The atmosphere at Mississippi State is unbeatable," said Connors. "I reallyenjoyed the school and the facilities. I've always wanted to play baseballin the SEC and I am honored to have the opportunity to play for Coach Polk."
Powers is the son of John and Patricia Powers of Naperville, Ill. His fatherlettered three years in football at the University of Michigan before beingdrafted by the New York Giants in the 1981 NFL draft.
