
State Strikes Early, Rolls Past ULM 15-4 In Opener At Trustmark Park

PEARL, Miss. - Mississppi State scored five runs in the first inning --- twice on bases-loaded walks as the Bulldogs topped Louisiana-Monroe 15-4 in the opening game of a day/night doubleheader Wednesday at Trustmark Park.
State sent 10 batters to the plate in the opening frame against ULM starter Daniel Roberts (0-5), plating five runs with four walks, a bases-loaded hit batsman and singles by Thomas Berkery and Jeff Butts. Berkery went 3-for-5 and extended his hitting streak with his first inning single while Butts drove in two runs with his hit in the opening frame.
MSU scored twice in the second to lead 7-0 and erupted for five more runs and a 12-2 lead in fourth inning. Brad Jones belted his third home run of the year with a runner on base during the Bulldogs¹ six-hit burst.
Edward Easley and Thomas Berkery had three hits each while Joseph Hunter and Joseph McCaskill drove in three runs each. Ben Soignier went 2-for-3 and hit his fifth home run of the year, a two-run shot toleft in the third inning.
Freshman Aaron Weatherford (3-0) picked up the win in relief of Trent Hill, who scattered six hits and allowed two runs over four innings in his first career start. Weatherford retired all six batters he faced in the fifth and sixth innings.
ULM pitchers issued seven walks, five by Bucky Chandler who was charged with eight runs on 10 hits during his 6-1/3 innings of middle inning relief.
Brooks Tinsley allowed a run in the seventh in a career-first mound appearance while Jesse Carver worked the final two innings.
