FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Mississippi State sent seven batters to the plate in a four-run fourth inning and junior righthander Stephanie Comeaux turned in her second no-hitter of the season to help the 22nd-ranked Bulldogs snap a two-game losing streak in league openers with a 5-0 blanking of homestanding Arkansas Saturday afternoon at Lady ?€˜Back Yard in Fayetteville, Ark.
Redshirt sophomore Hayle Guess drove in a pair of key runs and scored twice to highlight a 2-for-4 effort at the plate for the Bulldogs (22-6, 1-0 SEC) who improved to 4-6 in SEC openers with the triumph. Callye Williams homered for the second time this season to key a 2-for-3, two-run hitting line, with Katie Johnson scoring once on a 1-for-3 day at the plate. Carrie Egnor walked twice in three trips to the plate for Arkansas (12-12, 1-3) who dropped their fourth-straight contest to the Bulldogs.
Comeaux (12-1), who turned in a no-no in an abbreviated 8-0 victory over Jacksonville on February 11 in Tampa, Fla., became the first MSU pitcher in program history to achieve the feat against an SEC team after surrendering just a trio of walks against the Lady ?€˜Backs. Blaire Perry (4-5) saddled the loss for Arkansas after allowing five runs on six hits and three walks.
I thought we did a good job offensively, especially in the bottom part of the order. Katie Johnson, Gina McCloud and Callye Williams really gave us a big boost, said Mississippi State head coach Jay Miller. Callye gave us a big home run to put it out of reach and, obviously, Stephanie did a great job on the mound. She really kept them off balance and moved the ball around really well. It was nice to see her get rewarded for that.
After stranding a pair of runners in the opening frame, MSU went to work again in the second but cashed in this time on Guess' two-out triple that plated Williams who had earlier reached on a leadoff single. With Comeaux slicing through the Lady ?€˜Back order, the Bulldogs would explode for four insurance runs in the fourth, utilizing a leadoff home run by Williams, a clutch Arkansas throwing error and RBI knocks by Guess and Michelle Kinney, to take a 5-0 lead into the fifth.
