STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Mississippi State junior pitcher Saunders Ramsey has been named to the 2004 SEC Baseball Good Works Team. The award spotlights student-athletes who give back to their community through superior service efforts.
Active in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes program, Ramsey has served as a featured speaker at that organization's functions in the Golden Triangle area. The Starkville, Miss., native has also worked with local Habitat for Humanity projects, has spoken to numerous youth groups in area schools and churches, and has participated in other community service projects undertaken by Mississippi State University's student-athlete organization, the M-Club.
Ramsey has starred for the Bulldogs out of the bullpen in 2004, compiling a 7-1 record with four saves and 48 strikeouts in 43.2 innings. He leads the MSU staff in wins, pitching appearances and saves, and has notched wins in his last three appearances, two against Southeastern Conference co-champion Arkansas.
The MSU right-hander has also excelled in the classroom. A civil engineering major, Ramsey qualified for the initial balloting for the 2004 CoSIDA Academic All-America team, is MSU baseball's recipient of the 2003-04 Newsom Award for academic excellence, and has qualified for his second SEC Academic Honor Roll selection.
