Dogs Rally In 12th For 7-3 Win In Jackson

JACKSON, Miss -- Mississippi State erupted for four runs in the top of the 12th inning Wednesday night to claim a 7-3 win over Louisiana-Monroe in the final game of the 2004 Entergy Louisiana Series at Smith-Wills Stadium. State (12-2) blanked Louisiana Tech 7-0 Tuesday night.
The score was deadlocked at 3-3 after three innings and stayed that way until Tyler Scarbrough doubled in the first of MSU's four runs in the 12th off relief pitcher Brandon Arrant (0-1). Brad Jones followed with a two-run ground-rule double that hopped over the center field wall and Tyler Jones singl;e plated the game's final run.
Junior righty Saunders Ramsey (2-0) worked a season-longest five innings, allowing one baserunner, a two-out single in the 10th by Ty Rollinson. Ramsey struck out six on a night filled with strikeouts. Four MSU hurlers combined for a season-high 18, seven by freshman starter Josh Johnson during his 4-1/3 inning stint.
ULM pitchers fanned 17, six by starter Lee Graves and five more by Jim Miller, the fifth of six Indian pitchers in the game.
State took the early lead, sending seven batters to the plate off ULM starter Lee Graves. Leadoff batter Jeffrey Rea opened the game and scored three batters later on Craig Tatum's double off the center field wall.
The Indians struck for two runs in the second to take a 2-1 lead. Daniel Raymond drew a walk, moced to second when MSU freshman starter Josh Johnson struck Mario Fillippi with a pitch, and Glenn Jackson followed with a two-out triple into the right field corner.
MSU surged back into the lead in its next at-bat when Steve Gendron laced a doble to right-center field, Brad Corley walked, and Tyler Scarbrough drove them home with a single to left.
ULM first baseman Ben Jones opened the ULM third with a single to left, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored the tying run on Josh Morrison's two-out single to left.
The Bulldogs put a runner in scoring position but were unable to score in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings but broke through in a big way to the delight of a seasn-largest crowd of 3,643.
Scarbrough finished the night with two hits and three RBI to lead State. ULM leadoff hitter Glenn Jackson went 3-for-5 with a single, a double and a triple while driving in two of the Indians' three runs.
The Bulldogs return to Starkville to open 2004 SEC competition this weekend. State hosts Tennessee (17-2) Friday at 6:30 p.m. to open a three-game series.
