STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Mississippi State soccer head coach Neil McGuire announced an additional signee to his 2003 recruiting class Thursday afternoon as California native and current Brandon star Chelsea Izquierdo inked her name to a national letter of intent to continue her playing career at Mississippi State.
Izquierdo comes to Starkville after helping to lead Brandon to the 2003 Region 5A Championship and the state tournament where the Lady Bulldogs were eventually knocked off by the tournament champion. She is expected to contribute immediately at Mississippi State.
"Chelsea will be a very nice addition to our team," McGuire said. "She is a tough young lady who can dominate in the air, has good soccer vision, and is an excellent passer. Chelsea will also bring added class to this team. She is a wonderful young lady who fits well with the personality of this program."
No stranger to athletic successes, Chelsea helped her Westlake High School squad to the 2001-02 Marmonte league championship before moving to Mississippi and Brandon High School under head coach Frankie Marino. Izquierdo was a co-captain for the California Legends and coach Cam Camarena during her time in her native state and helped the club organization to numerous tournament championships including the San Diego Surf Cup, the Super Clubs, the Pleasantine Invitational and Irvine Cup titles.
While in Westlake, Chelsea was a two-year participant in the state of California Olympic Development Program for head coach Lara Heffner. The daughter of Luis and Vicki Izuierdo was born Sept. 4, 1985, in Los Angeles and has a younger sister, Lexie. An academic standout as well at Brandon, Izquierdo currently maintains a 3.6 GPA and is an honor student. She is undecided on a major at MSU.
