MSU Pounds Out 17 Hits, Tops UAB Blazers 13-4

STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Brad Corley and J.B. Tucker had three hits each and No. 5 Mississippi State (23-3-1) pounded out a season-high 17 hits Tuesday night in topping No. 31 UAB 13-4 at Dudy Noble Field. The win gave the Bulldogs a sweep of their two-game set with UAB (21-7).
Jon Mungle opened a 2-for-3 outing with a three-run blast as State sent 10 batters to the plate during a six-run, second-inning burst. State batted around again in the fourth, scoring four runs and staking starter Jeff Lacher (4-0) to a 10-2 lead.
Shortstop Matthew Maniscalco extended his career-best hitting streak to 14 games with a single, a double and his fourth home run of the year, a towering solo shot to left to open the sixth.inning.
Catcher J.B. Tucker delivered a pair of RBI singles and extended his hitting streak to a career-best 10 games, while Brad Corley laced a pair of doubles and scored three runs on a three-hit night.
Lacher struck out a season-high seven batters in five innings, scattering five hits and allowing two runs (one earned) to pick up his fourth consecutive win. Jamie Gant, Steven Dowe, Jacob Ociesa and Robby Goodson worked an inning each over the final four frames. It was the first mound action of the season for Dowe and Ociesa.
Blazer lefty Griffin Zarbough, the first of five UAB hurlers in the game, was charged with six runs on seven hits and took the loss.
Mississippi State travels to Jackson Wednesday to test instate rival Mississippi (17-10) in the 24th annual Mayor's Trophy Game at Smith-Wills Stadium. Freshman Brad Corley (0-0, 3.79) is due to draw starting mound duties for the Bulldogs.
State resumes SEC competition at home this weekend, opening a three-game series against Kentucky (10-17) Friday at 6:30 p.m.
