Ruiz, State's lone senior in 2002, earned his second appointment to the district team after achieving the same distinction last year and going on to be named to Verizon's national third team as well. He will also be placed on the ballot for this year's national team, which will be released later this summer.
A 3.96 student in international business, the Colmar, France, native is a three-time Academic all-Southeastern Conference honoree and an MSU President's List scholar. He was also MSU's nominee for the 2002 SEC Boyd McWhorter Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Annually given to the top male scholar in all SEC sports, he was one of three finalists for that award.
"David has been an outstanding student-athlete during his entire career," MSU head coach Sylvain Guichard said. "That he was named to the Verizon District Team again is not a surprise. We are very proud of his accomplishments."
In addition to his academic success, Ruiz helped lead State to its 12th consecutive NCAA Team Championship appearance this season. After missing a month of play late in the year with a back injury, he underwent surgery to repair the problem. He would return to action for the Bulldogs in the SEC and NCAA Championships, providing a victory in State's first-round NCAA win over South Alabama.
