Mississippi State Soccer Hosts 7 v. 7 Showcase

Games featuring Mississippi State and Memphis White, as well as a matchup between Georgia State and Memphis Green, will open up round-robin play at 8:30 a.m. Six more games, consisting of two thirty-minute halves, will follow every 90 minutes thereafter. In addition to the 8:30 contest against Memphis White, the Bulldogs will play at 10 a.m. against Georgia State and at 2:30 p.m. against Southeastern Louisiana. All games of the 2001 Mississippi State 7 v. 7 Showcase will take place at the Mississippi State Soccer Field.
Teams for the tournament will consist of seven players apiece with the playing surface being reduced to accomodate the smaller-scale contests.
In addition to regulation games being reduced by 30 minutes, other rules for the event include: goalkeepers being unable to punt, unlimited substitutes on own throw-ins and any goal kicks and the disallowment of substitutions on corner kicks. Two yellow cards will still result in a red card (ejection) and will result in the offending player sitting out the remainder of the contest, as well as the following game.
"This tournament will give us an opportunity to see what aspects of our game we need to continue to improve on," said head coach Neil McGuire of the event. "It will also give our fans an opportunity to see some of the younger players on our squad who have stepped in to replace our senior class."
Although practicing just less than a month already, State has already posted an impressive showing in a tournament in Memphis. Since then, McGuire has continued to see improvements in his squad as they begin preparations for the 2001 season which begins in late August.
"Spring is going very well, with each player working to improve on their previous personal bests in terms of fitness and skill aquisition," he said. "As a team, we are becoming more tactically aware as our understanding of the game increases. This is a very productive time for us all."
