TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Seniors Brandon McBride and Marta Freitas led the way for the Mississippi State track and field teams at the SEC Championships after both were crowned champions Saturday.
Freitas, who won the indoor mile SEC champion title, posted a time of 4:24.00 to capture the win. Not long after winning the title, Freitas turned around and recorded a sixth-place finish in the 800m run with a time of 2:08.48. All together the senior clinched 13 points for her team.
“I feel there is nothing more beautiful in a competition than good competition,” Freitas said. “I was so happy race against Dominique [Scott], she's such an amazing athlete. Winning today mean's a lot. I'm so proud to be a Bulldog. It's also sad that this is my last SEC outdoors, but I wanted to give the best for the team and I feel I was successful.”
The nation's leader in the 800m run, McBride, took control of the race to come out with the win. McBride, who won the title in 2014, posted a facility record 1:45.68.
McBride went on to compete in the 4x400m relay along with Dustin James II, Alfred Larry and Rasheed Tatham. The foursome finished fifth with a time of 3:05.38.
Larry also contributed to the men's score with a 8th-place finish in the 400m dash. The senior recorded a time of 46.27 to earn one point for the Maroon and White.

Also scoring in the high jump was sophomore Logan Boss with a season-best clearance of 5-08.75. Boss tied for fifth overall.
Earning points in the field for the men's team was high jumper Seth Peace. The senior cleared 7-00.50, just short of his personal-best 7-01, to place third.
Appearing in his first SEC Championships, Vince Castillo brought home two points for the men's team with a seventh-place finish in the 400m hurdles.
Also finishing seventh was senior Cornelia Griesche in the 5000m run clocking a personal-best 16:24.96. Her time is the second-best in school history. Griesche finished second in the 3000m steeplechase Friday night giving her a total of 10 points for MSU.
