April 05, 2016 | Men's Golf
WEST POINT, Miss. – On a visually stunning day for golf, Ross Bell and Ben Wood led Mississippi State men's golf team to a 594 in Monday's opening two rounds of the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship.
MSU heads into Tuesday's final 18 holes at historic Old Waverly Golf Club tied for seventh place with Louisiana-Monroe and Louisiana-Lafayette.
“I thought Ross Bell played with a tremendous amount of consistency today, but overall we didn't have that same consistency as a group,” MSU coach Clay Homan said.
Bell, a redshirt freshman, and Wood, a senior, fired identical 144's over Monday's 36 holes to finish tied for ninth.
Bell birdied two of his opening four holes to finish the opening round with a 1-under-par 71. Bell finished 3-under on the front nine as he went on to card a 73 in his second round.
Wood played 3-under golf on the first nine holes. In his final 18 holes, he struggled to a 4-over tally on the front nine before answering with four birdies over the back nine to card identical scores of 72 for the day.
Playing as an individual, Johnny Newnham shot a 72 and a 73 to enter Tuesday's final round tied for 14th with a 145.
In his third event of the year, Taylor Bibbs carded a 152 on the day, tying him for 53rd.
Taylor Grant shot a 156, tying him for 68th with fellow Bulldog Jackson Dick, who is competing as an individual.
Rounding out the Bulldog team scorecard, Ben Follett-Smith shot a two-round total of 162 for 82nd place.
Freshman Severin Soller also competed as an individual and carded a 173 to place 83rd heading into Tuesday's final round.
“We have to have a better outing tomorrow and have everyone in the lineup do their job,” Homan said.
McNeese State holds the team lead with a 572, while South Alabama's Peter Staalbo holds a one-shot lead on the individual side with a 5-under 139.
Championship Tuesday begins with a 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
Admission is free for Tuesday, and Hail State Rewards members receive 350 for attending and 200 bonus points for staying at least three hours
