Pieters Leads Bulldogs In Round One
April 15, 2016 | Women's Golf
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – In one of her best opening rounds of the season, Izel Pieters quietly paced the Mississippi State women's golf team to an 11th-place finish in the first round of the SEC Championships at Greystone.
Carding a 1-over-par on the both front and back nine holes, Pieters ended her day tied for 17th.
“I struggled on the first few holes, but then I hit a few pars and was finally able to land a birdie on my fourth hole,” Pieters said. “The birdie helped my confidence and I felt like I played well. I would of liked to of had a better final hole, but I guess you have to take what you can get.”
“With the exception of two holes, we played very well. When we limit the big numbers we will see a dramatic improvement,” said MSU coach Ginger Brown-Lemm. “We worked hard this afternoon after the round on a few things, and I feel a better round coming.
Breaking the Top 25 was Jessica Peng at T24. She had a team high four birdies, ending her day with a 75.
Ji Eun Baik didn't start the day like she would have chosen, finishing her first nine holes 5-over. After posting an eagle on No. 3, she went on to finish the back even to record a 77.
In her first SEC Championship, Katie Holt tallied an 82.
The Bulldogs will be back in action for the second round Saturday at 8 a.m. CT.
