Theron Leads MSU In First Round

Hilton Head, S.C. – Starting off hot for the Mississippi State women's golf team was freshman Bianca Theron, who led the team with a 73 in the opening round of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate at Long Cove Club.

The Bulldogs ended the day tied for 13th place with a 303 total, six shots out of 7th place held by ranked 21st Tennessee.

The fourth ranked University of Alabama lead the tournament with a score of 278.

Starting from hole No. 1, Theron quickly got off to a good start by shooting nine consecutive pars, completing her front nine with a 36. She then moved to the back nine where she bogeyed her first three holes. However, she quickly made up for it by draining three birdies to stand tied at 23rd.

“It was an interesting round, two completely opposite nines,” Theron said. “I kept it together well after the three-straight bogeys on the back nine, by shooting three birdies to follow. I just committed to every shot and tried to hit them confidently.”

Ji Eun Baik fired a 76 on the day.

Izel Pieters ended her front nine 4-over, but found her rhythm on the back nine and was able to shave off two strokes from her start. Pieters totaled a 77 on the day. Tying Pieters with a 77 was Jessica Peng, who was able to fire one birdie.

Katie Holt posted three pars in a row to begin her round before shooting a bogey followed by two birdies in a row on the front nine holes. Holt finished the first round seven over par.

The Bulldogs will be back in action for round two on Tuesday.
