February 07, 2016 | Baseball
STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mississippi State freshman left-hander Ethan Small cruised through four innings of shutout relief to lead Maroon to a 2-0 victory against Gray Sunday afternoon at Dudy Noble Field. The eight-inning exhibition marked MSU's seventh scrimmage of the preseason.
Junior right-hander Zac Houston started the game for Maroon with a scoreless inning before giving way to Small, who fanned four batters and allowed one hit and two walks. Junior Reid Humphreys recorded the save after newcomers Jared Padgett and Blake Smith threw an inning apiece.
The two teams played scoreless baseball for three innings before Maroon jumped on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth. Senior Mike Smith singled to left with one out and advanced two bases on a throwing error to first by Gray's pitcher on a pickoff attempt. Junior Luke Reynolds then drove Smith home on a single up the middle.
Smith scored again in the fifth on an RBI single by freshman Luke Alexander after doubling down the left field line.
