February 07, 2016 | Baseball
STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mississippi State baseball's sixth scrimmage of the preseason resulted in a 4-4 tie between Maroon and Gray after junior outfielder Tanner Poole's two-RBI single with two outs in the seventh. The exhibition Saturday was held at Dudy Noble Field.
Gray trailed 4-2 heading into the final inning before the comeback started. Junior Luke Reynolds walked, advanced on a botched pickoff attempt and moved to third on a groundout. Freshman Jake Mangum then walked and stole second, allowing Poole to drive in both runners to tie the game.
The victors had scored its first two runs in the sixth thanks to a sacrifice fly from junior Nathaniel Lowe and a triple from senior Mike Smith.
Maroon led 5-0 thanks to a spectacular start from junior right-handed pitcher Austin Sexton, who dominated Gray hitters with seven strikeouts in four shutout innings. The righty allowed just one hit and walked two, before giving way to Paul Young, who tossed a scoreless fifth.
Six different Bulldogs had hits for Maroon, with junior Gavin Collins, junior Reid Humphreys and freshman Brant Blaylock recording RBIs.
