February 06, 2016 | Baseball
STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mississippi State preseason All-American Dakota Hudson edged out junior left-hander Daniel Brown in an intense pitchers' duel Friday night at Dudy Noble Field. Hudson's Maroon squad defeated Brown's Gray squad, 4-0, in a six-inning exhibition that marked MSU's fifth scrimmage of the preseason.
Hudson struck out four in as many innings, allowing three hits and three walks. Brown allowed one unearned run in the same amount of innings with five strikeouts, no walks and two hits allowed.
After the book closed on Hudson, freshman southpaw Kale Breaux tossed a scoreless fifth inning. Junior righty Reid Humphreys then closed out the victory for Maroon with two strikeouts in a hitless sixth.
Maroon was led offensively by a trio of hitters who collected two hits each: redshirt freshman Cole Gordon (2 for 4, 2 RBIs), sophomore Ryan Gridley (2 for 3, 2 runs) and senior Mike Smith (2 for 4, RBI).
Following three innings of scoreless baseball, Smith gave Maroon a 1-0 lead with an infield RBI single. The base hit drove in Gridley, who reached on an error, stole second and advanced to third on a balk.
After Hudson used a strikeout and a double play to escape a bases-loaded jam with no outs, Maroon plated two more runs in the fifth. With runners on first and third, Gordon singled up the middle to score freshman Elih Marrero (1 for 3) and push junior Gavin Collins to third. Collins then scored on a sacrifice fly by Humphreys.
The final run of the game came when Gridley scored on an RBI single through the right side of the infield by Gordon.
