Gray Wins Walk-Off Thriller 4-3 Versus Maroon
February 14, 2016 | Baseball
STARKVILLE, Miss. - Redshirt junior Cody Brown scored from second on a double play to give Gray a dramatic 4-3 walk-off win against Maroon Sunday afternoon at Dudy Noble Field. The seven-inning exhibition marked MSU's 11th scrimmage of the preseason.
Maroon held a commanding 3-0 lead heading to the bottom of the seventh, which started when junior Luke Reynolds earned a leadoff walk. Following a single from junior Gavin Collins, Reynolds scored on an RBI single from redshirt freshman Cole Gordon. Brown was then hit by pitch, followed by Collins scoring on a bases-loaded walk issued to freshman Jake Mangum.
With the bases loaded and no outs, senior Josh Lovelady hit a ground ball to shortstop. Gordon scored easily on the 6-4-3 double play, but as Maroon's first baseman completed the twin killing with the force at first, Brown rounded third and dashed for home. The Biloxi, Miss., native slid under the tag at home and was called safe for the walk-off victory.
The four-run seventh ruined a solid outing from Maroon starter Noah Hughes. The freshman right-hander struck out four in three innings of shutout ball. Senior lefty Trent Waddell (1.0 IP) and redshirt junior righty Paul Young (2.0 IP) also had scoreless outings in a losing effort.
Maroon jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third with an RBI double by junior Jack Kruger and an RBI single up the middle by fellow junior Nathaniel Lowe. Redshirt sophomore Brent Rooker made his return to the lineup and hit a solo home run to left in the seventh for Maroon's final run.
