December 09, 2016 | Men's Tennis
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Highlighted by the stellar play of sophomore Nuno Borges, the Mississippi State men's tennis team turned in a tremendous fall season on the tennis court to cap 2016 in style.
State earned a combined 30 singles wins and 12 doubles victories over the fall, with Borges' 12 singles wins leading the way while the duo of Niclas Braun and Trevor Foshey topped the Bulldogs with seven doubles victories.
For Borges, the fall campaign was his first with the Maroon and White after joining the squad in January of 2016. The Porto, Portugal native has been sensational since his first day in Starkville as he followed up his All-SEC spring season with an impressive fall slate. The sophomore downed six foes at the ITA Southern Regional back in October to claim the singles crown and punch his ticket to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championship where he fought all the way to the semifinals before falling in three sets to the nation's No. 1 player, Mikael Torpegaard.
Bulldogs Vaughn Hunter and Strahinja Rakic finished the fall with five wins to rank second on the team, while Mate Cutura and Foshey tied for fourth with three victories with Braun rounding out the Maroon and White with a pair of singles wins.
On the doubles side, four tandems earned wins for the Bulldogs as Braun and Foshey garnered the most success with seven wins. The pair finished runner-up at the ITA Southern Regional after defeating four doubles teams, two of which were ranked.
Speaking of ranked foes, the Bulldogs took down eight ITA ranked singles players over the fall. Borges again led the way with six ranked wins, while Braun and Rakic each earned one ranked victory. In doubles play, State's duos knocked off three ranked pairs as Braun and Foshey defeated two ranked teams and the tandem of Borges and Rakic upset one ranked team.
Aside from fall tournament success, the Bulldogs also made an impact on the futures scene as well. Bulldogs Braun and Rakic earned five total futures wins. The pair earned their most success at two futures, with Braun earning four at the Birmingham Futures while Rakic posted four victories at the Pensacola Futures. Borges tallied all four of his futures wins at the Pensacola Futures for his lone futures appearance of the fall.
