STARKVILLE, Miss. – In everything she's done, it's without a doubt that Alex Wilcox has been a champion. The Brantley, Ala., native brings that championship mentality to the Mississippi State softball program, joining the Maroon and White as the fourth member of the 2017 signing class.
"Alex is the complete package. She does it all. She can run, she can hit for power, she can pitch, oh, and she is the homecoming queen," Stuedeman said. "She is 17 going on 30. She has a positive mindset with a dominating mentality, a competitor in every sense of the word. She always has a smile on her face, regardless of the obstacle she encounters. Alex has already strengthened our family ten-fold. Fans will be proud to see this young lady in the Maroon and White."
Coming to Starkville via Brantley High School, Wilcox is currently ranked 50th in the 2017 class by Flo Softball and has reached as high as fifth in the rankings.
"I chose Mississippi State because I fell in love with the campus and the atmosphere," Wilcox said. "It's very family oriented and it felt like home."
Wilcox has been a standout for the BHS Bulldogs in her three years, already racking up a trio of AHSAA state championships (2014-16) and earning AHSAA State Tournament MVP honors in two of those (2014 & 2016).
In her freshman season, Wilcox tallied a .416 average with 41 RBIs and 10 homers, while going 28-7 with 370 strikeouts on the mound to lead BHS to a 41-10 record. Along with leading BHS to a state title and garnering tourney MVP honors, Wilcox was also named 1A Pitcher of the Year and to the AHSAA All-State Team.
Wilcox bested her freshman year at the plate with a stellar .529 average in her second season. She also tallied 28 RBIs and five home runs, landing All-State honors yet again and helping BHS to a 33-10 record and another state title. Her junior campaign saw Wilcox post career highs in RBIs and home runs, as she put together 67 and 13, respectively. Adding in a .483 average, Wilcox paced the Bulldogs to a 39-10 showing and their third-straight AHSAA state championship.
For her impressive junior season, Wilcox was honored as the AHSAA 1A Player of the Year, Hitter of the Year and state tournament MVP, while being named AHSAA All-State yet again.
Softball has not been the only thing Wilcox has left her mark on at Brantley High School in three years so far, as she has been a star for the Bulldogs in both basketball and volleyball. Wilcox has lettered three years as a guard for the BHS basketball program, helping lead the program to state championships in 2013 and 2014. Wilcox has also lettered in five seasons as a middle hitter for the Bulldogs' volleyball squad.
Wilcox's success on the diamond does not stop at BHS, as she has put together a dominating career on the travel ball scene. Playing for coach Jay Roberson, Wilcox helped the AL Birmingham Thunderbolts '99 reach a Top 7 showing at PGF Nationals in 2014 before earning back-to-back third-place finishes in 2015 and 2016.
MSU's newest addition now plays for coach Rocky Thompson and the AL Birmingham Thunderbolts Premier, joining fellow 2017 classmates Kinsey Goelz, O'Neil Roberson and Mia Davidson.
The daughter of Shaun and LeAnn Wilcox, Alex is a member of the Junior Honor Society and the National Honor Society. She plans to major in education at Mississippi State.
