STARKVILLE, Miss. – Following a long line of Bulldogs from the Birmingham, Ala., area, O'Neil Roberson will join the Mississippi State softball program as the third signee of the 2017 class.
"Hitting home runs is O'Neil's business and business is good," MSU coach Vann Stuedeman. "She is a pure power hitter that will add strength to the middle of our lineup. Her consistent personality will bring stability to our team. She will be a teammate that everyone can depend on and trust. Her competitiveness and desire to be the best are the perfect fit for the MSU softball family.
A product of Oak Mountain HS, Roberson comes to Starkville as the 33rd-ranked recruit in the 2017 class by FloSoftball. She follows former Bulldogs Katie Cooley (2007) and Jessica Cooley (2013), along with current Bulldogs Caroline Seitz and Ashlee Sanders as Oak Mountain HS stars to join the Maroon and White.
"I chose Mississippi State because of the family atmosphere that always makes me feel right at home, the beautiful campus and facilities," Roberson said. "I'm so excited for Mississippi State to be my new home for the next four years."
Roberson has been a stud for Oak Mountain the last three seasons, having her breakout campaign last year. As a junior, Roberson hit .500 with 65 hits, 70 RBIs and breaking Seitz's single-season home run record with 21 bombs. The 7A ASWA Hitter of the Year and All-State First Team member led OMHS to a 30-14 record and a 2016 Area Championship.
The accolades did not stop there for Roberson, as she was also named a Gatorade Player of the Year finalist and a member of the North-South All-Star Team. Roberson, a member of FloSoftball's Hot 100 Prospects list, was named the Over The Mountain Player of the Year and to the All Over The Mountain Team.
On the travel ball scene, Roberson played for her father, Jay Roberson, on the Birmingham Thunderbolts '99 up until this past year. Roberson now plays on Birmingham Thunderbolts Premier under coach Rocky Thompson, joining future Bulldogs Kinsey Goelz, Mia Davidson and Alex Wilcox.
Roberson was electric in 2015, earning a .409 clip with 11 homers, leading her travel squad to a third-place finish at PGF Nationals. Another third-place finish was in store in 2016, as Roberson's .347 batting average and six homers paced her squad.
Roberson is planning on majoring in special education with a minor in secondary education mathematics.
