STARKVILLE, Miss. – Mississippi State landed a talented forward from the Sunshine State Wednesday as Jonika Garvin signed a letter of intent with the Bulldog women's basketball team.
Garvin, the Bulldogs' first signee of the early signing period, joined Palm Beach State College this season after starting her career at Auburn a year ago.
"We are really happy to have the opportunity to re-recruit Jonika after losing her to Auburn the first time," Bulldog head coach Vic Schaefer said. "We are very excited to have the opportunity to have her back in the Bulldog family."
As a freshman with the Tigers, she averaged 10 minutes in 20 games, averaging 1.9 points and 1.6 rebounds per game. She also tallied eight blocks while collecting seven steals.
"Mississippi State is truly my home. I knew that from the beginning," Garvin said. "The team itself is very welcoming and normally that would be enough for me, but the whole school itself is also welcoming. The other sports, the academic professors and the students that go there, they're all very welcoming."
"It's a great feeling because I know I'm going where I'm supposed to go. I know once I get there I'll be taken care of. I already know a couple girls on the team, and they've known how I play since my junior year of high school. Not only the coaches, but also the players will try to bring out the 'Bulldog' in me."
Garvin was a three-star prospect ranked No. 100 overall and 17th at her position by ESPN coming out of Lake Worth Community High School in Lake Worth, Fla. The 6-foot standout was also rated in the Top 200 by Blue Star Girls Basketball Report and a Top 10 Player to Watch in the Palm Beach area.
She led her team to the regional finals in 2014, averaging 18.2 points, 7.4 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 2.7 steals in her junior season.
A year earlier, the Sun-Sentinel All-County First Team selection scored at a 20.9 per-game clip in helping guide Lake Worth to the district championship.
Garvin comes from a basketball family, as her mother, Melissa, played at Edison Community College while her father, Jonathan, competed at Bethune-Cookman.
