Borges Advances To National Indoor Championship Semifinals
November 04, 2016 | Men's Tennis
FLUSHING, N.Y.– Two upset wins on Friday vaulted Mississippi State men's tennis sophomore Nuno Borges to the semifinals of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championship, as the Bulldog became the first MSU singles player to advance past quarterfinal action in program history.
The victories for No. 43 Borges came against No. 13 Florian Lakat of California and No. 7 Skander Mansouri of Wake Forest, as the Bulldog defeated the two ranked foes in back-to-back singles action at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on Friday.
"We're excited for Nuno and proud of all he's accomplished so far at the National Indoor Championship," head coach Matt Roberts said. "Today he had two of the best matches in his career at MSU and showed an amazing mental fortitude. Nuno had two tough challenges and answered the call like we knew he would. He's represented MSU well in New York and I'm excited to watch him continue to grow and develop over the weekend."
Besides becoming the first singles player to advance past quarterfinal action at the National Indoor Championships, the Portugal native is also the first MSU representative since the doubles duo of Laurent Miquelard and Joc Simmons in 1994 to make it to a semifinal appearance. Furthermore, Borges is just the fifth Bulldog singles player in program history to earn a semifinal appearance or higher at a major collegiate tournament.
In his first match of the day, Borges fell behind to No. 13 Lakat after a hard-fought first set, 7-6 (8), but stormed back to take the next two sets, 7-6(4), 6-4. The win was Borges' highest-ranked win of his Bulldog career, but he quickly updated that history as he took on No. 7 Mansouri.
The afternoon cap was a case of redemption for Borges, who fell to Mansouri at the ITA All-American to open the fall season. On Friday however, Borges flipped the script to down the Demon Deacon in straight-sets, 7-5, 6-1. The win over the No. 7 foe is the highest-ranked win for Borges as a Bulldog.
Borges faces his toughest test to date on Saturday, as he takes on No. 1 Mikael Torpegaard of Ohio State in semifinal action at 11 a.m. CT.
Borges has earned a 12-2 mark in his first fall campaign as a Bulldog, while holding a nine-match win streak on the singles court. The sophomore has also posted a 6-1 record against ITA ranked foes this fall.
