Former Diamond Dawgs Vie For World Series In MLB Postseason
October 04, 2016 | Baseball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – A pair of former Diamond Dawgs are in the Major League Baseball Postseason with their respective teams, with hopes of capturing a World Series title.
Baltimore Orioles manager Buck Showalter is looking to help his team advance to the American League Divisional Series with a win against the Toronto Blue Jays tonight. Meanwhile, first baseman Mitch Moreland and his Texas Rangers will be watching and waiting to see who they will face in the ALDS.
Showalter led the Orioles to an 89-73 record and a berth in the American League Wild Card game against the Blue Jays. The winner-take-all game, held in Toronto, will be televised at 7 p.m. CT on TBS, with the victor advancing to face Moreland's Rangers in the best-of-five game series. Game 1 of the ALDS is set for Thursday at 3:30 p.m. CT from Global Life Park in Arlington and will air on TBS.
Now in his seventh season with the Rangers, Moreland has hit .233 with 22 homers in 2016 while helping his team to an American League-best 95-67 record, clinching the AL West on September 23 with a road victory against Kendall Graveman's Oakland Athletics.
In his lone season at MSU in 1977, Showalter hit a Southeastern Conference-leading and program-best .459—a record that still stands in MSU record books. That season also saw Showalter drive in a team-high 44 runs while also earning first team All-American and first team All-SEC honors. His success in the Maroon and White led to his induction into the MSU Sports Hall of Fame in 2002.
Moreland played three seasons for the Bulldogs from 2005 to 2007, helping his team to a trio of NCAA tournament berths that included a trip to Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Nebraska, for the program's eighth College World Series appearance in 2007. At the plate, Moreland hit a career .332 average with 17 homers and 91 RBI, with his best campaign coming in the 2007 season in which he hit .343 with 10 home runs and 62 RBI.
The Amory native was also valuable on the mound, holding a 5-0 record in 25 relief appearances in his career with 16 of those coming in 2007. One of his more memorable outings saw him pitch the final two outs of the Starkville Super Regional against Clemson, including a strikeout to clinch the series.
