October 31, 2016 | Men's Tennis
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Continuing his successful run at the Highland Park Tennis Center, Mississippi State men's tennis sophomore Niclas Braun downed his fourth opponent at the Birmingham Futures to advance to the singles main draw on Tuesday.
The Berlin native knocked off his second seeded foe of the tournament as Braun defeated 12th-seeded Grayson Goldin, 6-0, 6-4, with ease. Braun faces fellow German native and former Auburn Tiger Lukas Ollert on Tuesday in the opening round of the main draw.
"Nic has played great these last four days in Birmingham and I'm proud of the way he competed today," head coach Matt Roberts said. "He accomplished a big feat by qualifying for the main draw with an event that features so many quality opponents. Each match here is a chance for him to grow and develop his game and Nic has taken advantage of that opportunity."
Braun's foe, Goldin, has a current ATP singles ranking of 1753. The right-handed American spent time with Florida State and Alabama, before transferring to South Florida for this upcoming season.
On the weekend, Braun has downed two ATP ranked opponents after Monday's defeat of 1753 Goldin and Sunday's win over Emil Reinberg who holds an 1115 overall ranking. On Tuesday Braun will take on his highest ATP ranked foe of the tournament so far as he faces Ollert, who is 995 overall.
The Birmingham Futures features a mixture of collegiate and professional tennis players, as the tournament begins with a 128 player qualifying draw that leads into a 32 player singles main draw beginning on Nov. 1
