BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Mississippi State men's tennis sophomore Niclas Braun upset second-seeded Emil Reinberg at the Birmingham Futures on Sunday as the Bulldog earned a three-set win to advance to the qualifying singles final round.
"This was a big win from Nic today against a tough opponent he will see again in the spring," assistant coach Matt Walters said. "Nic fought back hard and I couldn't be more proud of the will and determination he displayed today."
The Bulldog dropped the first set to Reinberg, but stormed back to take the next two and the match, 3-6, 7-6 (0), 6-2. Braun moves on to face the winner of Syrry Can Korkmaz and Grayson Goldin on Monday for a chance to qualify for the Birmingham Futures main draw.
The three-set victory for Braun is his third at the Highland Park Tennis Center this weekend, but his first over a seeded opponent. Braun's foe, Reinberg, is a sophomore at the University of Georgia and is ranked as the 109th best singles player by the ITA.
The Birmingham Futures features a mixture of collegiate and professional tennis players, as the tournament begins with a 128 player qualifying draw that leads into a 32 player singles main draw beginning on Nov. 1
