BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Sophomore Niclas Braun earned a straight-set win on Saturday to move on at the Birmingham Futures as MSU capped day two at the event from the Highland Park Tennis Center.
The Berlin native defeated David Gonzalez Rodriguez, 6-1, 7-5, as Braun moved past the right-hander from Spain. In the Bulldogs' second match from Birmingham, MSU's 26th-ranked Mate Cutura fell in a tough match as the senior lost to Tim Sandkaulen, 4-6, 7-5, 5-7. Braun will move on to the round of 32 in singles qualifying on Sunday.
The Birmingham Futures features a mixture of collegiate and professional tennis players, as the tournament begins with a 128 player qualifying draw that leads into a 32 player singles main draw beginning on Nov. 1

The Birmingham Future kicks off the first of three events for the Bulldogs over the next two weeks, as MSU will have representatives at the Birmingham Futures (Oct. 28-Nov. 6) the ITA National Indoor Championships (Nov. 3-Nov. 6) and the SEC Invite (Nov. 4-Nov. 6).
