Freshman Yang Leads Bulldogs In Cougar Classic Opening Round

CHARLESTON, S.C – In only her second collegiate tournament, freshman Athena Yang rose to the occasion and fired a 73 to lead the Mississippi State women's golf team in Sunday's round one of the Cougar Classic.
As a team, MSU ended its opening 18 holes at Yeaman's Hall Club in 16th place with a 296.
A Minnesota native, Yang shot even par over the front nine. After falling to 2-over through 14, she bounced back and shot 1-under for her final four holes to finish the day tied for 36th place.
"I know that I've been working hard at practice, so when I'm out on the course I just trust my game and play golf," Yang said. "I look forward to continuing to learn from my teammates and coaches and giving it my all on every round so I can be happy about myself at the end of the day."
Fellow freshman Teri Doss and sophomore Katie Holt followed Yang as they both shot 74s to tie for 51st position. Doss shot even par her first seven holes and carded three birdies over the back nine, including one on the par-5 18th.
Holt also ended her day with a birdie at No. 18 after wrapping her front nine at even par.
Senior Jessica Peng finished the opening round tied for 72nd after a 75, while classmate Ji Eun Baik shot a 77, finishing strong with a pair of birdies over her final four holes.
Furman took the clubhouse lead with a 278, while Wake Forest's Sierra Sims took the early individual lead with an opening-round 66.
The Bulldogs return to the Yeaman's Hall Club for second-round action on Monday.
