MSU Travels To Tennessee For Thursday Night Battle
October 19, 2016 | Soccer
STARKVILLE, Miss. – With three games remaining in the 2016 regular season, the Mississippi State soccer team (6-9-0, 1-7-0 SEC) travels to Knoxville as the Bulldogs face Tennessee (9-6-1, 4-3-1 SEC) on Thursday night at 6 p.m. CT.
"We've had a great week of training and I'm excited for us to get back out on the field this Thursday night," head coach Aaron Gordon said. "Our team has been in an upbeat mood all week, so I know they're up for the challenge and relish the opportunity they have against Tennessee."
Last Time Out
Despite a valiant effort at home last Friday night, the Bulldogs were topped by visiting LSU as the Tigers converted a penalty kick in the 59th minute to escape Starkville with the 1-0 win.
Scouting Tennessee
The Vols have not lost a contest since a 3-2 loss to Vanderbilt on Sept. 30. Since that defeat UT has earned three wins and one draw, outscoring opponents 9-4 during the stretch. Forward Hannah Wilkinson leads the Vol attack, after scoring nine goals and eight assist this season. The New Zealand native has earned six goals and added three assists in her last five outings.
Keys For MSU
Junior Mallory Eubanks currently leads the Bulldogs in points on the season after recording seven on the year. The forward is in a four-way tie for goals scored with sophomore Kennadi Carbin and the freshmen duo of Johanna Hamblett and MaKayla Waldner all scoring twice this season for the Maroon and White. Key against the Vols will be one of the four attackers getting into the scoring third and past the UT backline.
One Goal Losses
This season the Bulldogs have lost six contests by only one deciding goal. No. 25 Virginia Tech (1-2), Lipscomb (0-1), Vanderbilt (1-2), Missouri (1-2), No. 2 South Carolina (0-1) and LSU (0-1) make up the one-goal defeats.
Up Next
After Thursday's matchup, the Bulldogs will head south to Gainesville as the Bulldogs face No. 20 Florida on Sunday, Oct. 23 at 12 p.m. CT.
