October 14, 2016 | Soccer
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Despite a valiant effort at home on Friday night, the Mississippi State soccer team (6-9-0, 1-7-0 SEC) was topped by visiting LSU (7-9-0, 2-6-0 SEC) as the Tigers converted a penalty kick in the 59th minute to win, 1-0.
For the first 45 minutes of Friday's matchup, the Bulldogs held the upper hand against the Tigers as MSU outshot LSU, 8-1. The Tigers would respond in the second half as LSU recorded five attempts to close the gap.
In the 59th minute a handball would give the Tigers a penalty kick as LSU had its first real opportunity for a scoring chance. Junior Jorian Baucom converted the kick, giving LSU the 1-0 lead as the Tigers held on for the win.
"Tonight's game was tough but we have to keep our heads up," head coach Aaron Gordon said. "It's always hard to lose the way we did, but there is more games to be had and the season isn't over. I thought we did a great job attacking, but we were just a little unlucky."
The win for the Tigers broke a five-game losing skid for LSU, while improving its record in Starkville to 10-0-1.

Freshman MaKayla Waldner recorded a career-high in shots on Friday night as she led the team in attempts with five. The Dexter, Mo., native also had two shots on target to cap her night. Waldner is now tied for the team lead in shots (29) with Mallory Eubanks.
