In an interview this week, our volleyball coach David McFatrich was talking about the day he first visited Mississippi State on his job interview last January. In that discussion, he said he remembered immediately thinking that MSU was sitting on something huge. In fact, his exact thoughts now are that we have the potential to be the best in the country, the most special place for college athletics and college town life in a place with such a symbiotic relationship between the city and the university.
He said those words this week, believing them more as each day comes and goes. It's the main reason he chose to accept the job at MSU, he said, and it's an end he plans to fervently work for.
This week and every week as we move forward, that optimism and belief in our school, our athletic teams and our student-athletes and staff is more important than ever. The main thing that makes MSU such a special place is the fans, all of you who read this column. Our coaches have consistently observed what many of you have always known: it doesn't matter what the sport is. If a Bulldog team is winning, the Bulldog fans will support it.
We've set attendance records and broke season ticket high marks in nearly every sport we have over the last few years. Our finishes in the Learfield Director's Cup have gotten higher and higher, most recently finishing with the best rank of any school in the history of the state of Mississippi.
The success recently is, quite literally, unprecedented. So much of what we've witnessed at Scott Field, at Dudy Noble, at The Hump, Nusz Park, Newell-Grissom and the Mike Sanders Track and Field Complex has never happened before in the 125-plus years MSU has been around.
And all of you have been there for each step, for every big moment, just the same way you were there for the hard times, the down years and the disappointments along the way.
As we continue to cheer on our football team, that dedication and support is vital. When Coach Schaefer and Coach Howland return to the court, our voices are the most important ones for our Bulldogs to hear. When Coach Cohen's club returns to the diamond to defend their SEC Championship, they will do so knowing they have the support of the best fans in college baseball.
We always end this column by thanking you for your support of MSU athletics, but know how much that passion truly means to the people and teams we cheer on.
SOCCER BACK AT HOME FRIDAY NIGHT
While many of our teams are on the road this weekend, make sure you come out to support Coach Aaron Gordon and our soccer team Friday night against LSU. The game kicks off at 7 p.m. and we have a slew of family-friendly activities prepared for those who join.
Our ladies only have one more home game this fall, the season finale against Texas A&M at the end of the month, so this is a good opportunity to come check out one of our final home contests.
WRAPPING UP THIS WEEK'S EMAIL IN MAROON AND WHITE
- Make sure to check out Coach Fatch and our volleyball team on ESPNU tonight as they travel to Tuscaloosa to take on Alabama at 8 p.m. They then play at Auburn on Sunday at noon.
- For those traveling to Utah for our football game against BYU, join us at the Alumni Association's tailgate before the game. More info is available here.
- Because we play on Friday this week, Dawg Talk at The Veranda has been moved up to Wednesday night at 7. Coach Schaefer and Coach Rockey Felker will be guests this week as the football team is practicing at night in preparation for the late kickoff.
- And finally, fall baseball begins this week as the Diamond Dawgs have their first practice Thursday, then host a scrimmage on Friday at noon which is open to the public at Dudy Noble Field.
We appreciate what you do for Mississippi State Athletics and want to encourage you to get others involved. There are three things you can do to help the athletic department at Mississippi State reach its desired goals –
1. Buy Season Tickets
2. Financially Support the Bulldog Club
3. Get Others To Do The Same
Thanks for taking the time to read this Update.
Hail State!
