January 17, 2016 | Men's Tennis
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Junior Mate Cutura knocked off Texas Christian's No. 24 Guillermo Nunez in straight sets, 7-6, 6-0, to guide the Mississippi State men's tennis team on the second day of the Three Oaks Shootout.
No. 27 MSU would win four times against No. 3 TCU, to finish even in singles competition at 4-4 on Saturday afternoon. The biggest win however came from Cutura who earned his first win of this season.
“I like the way we competed in singles with Mate getting a huge win against the No. 24 player in the nation,” head coach Matt Roberts said. “We are looking forward to one more match here against another great team to continue our process of developing as a unit.”
Adding to that singles win total was the freshmen trio of Lucas Sanchez, Luka Sucevic and Strahinja Rakic. Sanchez and Sucevic each went three sets against their opponents, winning 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 and 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 respectively. For Rakic, the win came in straight sets, as the Serbian defeated Eduardo Nava, 6-3, 6-2.
“It was great to see Strale learn from yesterday and play with a lot more focus and fight,” Roberts said. “The team is seeing how we are right there with anyone in the nation and how competing on all courts gives us the best chance to win.”
In doubles play, the Bulldogs dropped four matches by the score of 6-3 to lose out against TCU.
MSU will face members of the No. 15 ranked University of South Florida squad at 12 p.m. CT on Sunday, to wrap up the tournament in Fort Myers. After the conclusion of the Three Oaks Shootout, the Bulldogs make the short trip to Tampa, Fla., for the ITA Kickoff on Jan. 23-24 to officially begin the spring season.
