Bulldogs and Golden Eagles Play to 0-0 Draw

STARKVILLE, Miss. – After claiming a 4-0 victory on Friday night against Nicholls State, Mississippi State battled in-state foe Southern Miss to a 0-0 draw to cap off a successful weekend for Bulldog soccer.
The Maroon and White (1-4-1) went the full distance with USM (2-1-3) on Sunday night, playing even with the Golden Eagles for 110 minutes.
“Friday we certainly created a lot of chances for ourselves,” coach Aaron Gordon said. “Tonight we just weren't that dangerous. We owned the game and controlled it the entire time, with the exception of a few long balls. We were really good on the back line, but we just didn't come up with what we wanted.”
MSU dominated the game statistically, outshooting USM in shots (10-2), shots on goal (4-1) and corners (8-1), but couldn't break the tie.
Freshman Carly Mauldin and sophomore Mallory Eubanks each finished with three shots on the game.
At goal, sophomore Tanya de Souza earned a clean sheet as the keeper played whistle to whistle for the full 110 minutes.
Much like Friday night, the Maroon and White backline smothered the USM attack. The Golden Eagles earned only one shot on goal for the match.
“We've been really good defensively the last couple of games,” Gordon said. “I thought we handled USM very easily. In midfield Carly Mauldin was spectacular, she was all over the field.
MSU opens SEC play on the road with a trip to Nashville, Tenn., to play Vanderbilt on Sept. 11, with the first kick at 7 p.m.
