Draw With Missouri Caps Successful Weekend For MSU
September 27, 2015 | Soccer
STARKVILLE, Miss. –Propelled by freshman Kennadi Carbin's equalizer in the 38th minute of Sunday's match, Mississippi State (3-5-3, 1-1-2) earned a hard-fought draw against Missouri (4-3-4, 2-1-1) to close out the weekend.
Sunday's draw comes days after picking up a scoreless tie with conference foe Tennessee on Friday. The 1-1-2 start in Southeastern Conference play for MSU is the best since 2001.
“I couldn't be more proud of our team and our program after this weekend,” MSU coach Aaron Gordon said. “We are early in the season and we have to keep proving ourselves and not look back. We still have some tough games to go, but nothing surprises me with this team anymore.”
In the 11th minute Mizzou's Savannah Trujillo would have a flurry of chances in front of the Bulldog goal, with her second attempt finding its way to the back of the net after playing a deflection. After going down 1-0 early, it's not surprising MSU would respond after showing the same kind of fight all season long.
The Bulldogs would even the score in the 38th minute, thanks to a perfectly played corner kick by sophomore McKenzie Adams that found the head of sophomore Kayleigh Henry who bounced it to Carbin for the goal.
“We worked on that exact set play throughout the week and McKenzie was one of the players that was giving us results off of it,” Gordon said. “She delivered the ball perfectly to Kennadi and we got what we needed.”
The goal for Carbin was the second of the season for the freshman with Henry also earning her second assist on the year, while Adams picked up her first.
The Bulldogs and Tigers would enter halftime knotted at one a piece with both clubs playing defensive-minded throughout the rest of the match.
Much like Friday's contest, the Bulldogs turned in an outstanding defensive performance to preserve the draw. At goal, sophomore Tanya de Souza stopped six shots in the game, with two of her saves coming in the second half.
MSU would spar with Mizzou for the rest of the match, holding on for the draw and earning a point in conference play. State is sixth in league standings after earning two points off of draws over the weekend.
MSU and Mizzou were even in shots (12) and corners (3), with the Tigers edging the Bulldogs in shots on goal (7-5).
Next up, the Maroon and White will hit the road again with a trip to College Station, Texas on Friday Oct. 2 to face No. 4 Texas A&M.
